California Smoke Detector Requirements 2026
California law requires smoke detectors in every sleeping room, outside every sleeping area, on every level of the home including the basement, and in any room where a fire could start and spread to sleeping areas.
For homes built or significantly renovated after 2014, California requires interconnected smoke detectors — when one alarm sounds, they all sound. For older homes, battery-operated detectors are still acceptable but hardwired interconnected detectors are strongly recommended.
California Carbon Monoxide Detector Requirements 2026
California requires CO detectors in all single-family homes with an attached garage or a fossil fuel burning appliance, within 15 feet of every sleeping room, and on every level of the home.
When Are Hardwired Smoke Detectors Required?
Hardwired smoke detectors with battery backup are required in all new construction and major renovations in California. They're also required when replacing existing hardwired detectors. If your home currently has hardwired detectors, you cannot replace them with battery-only units.

California law requires sellers to certify that the home has working smoke detectors and CO detectors in all required locations before close of escrow.
