How to Add Circuits to a Full Electrical Panel                               in Orange County

One of the most common calls we get from Orange County homeowners is "my panel is full but I need to add a circuit." Whether it's for an EV charger, a new appliance, or a home addition, here are your real options.

Why Is My Panel Full?

Modern homes demand significantly more electrical circuits than homes built 20-30 years ago. EV chargers, home offices, multiple AC units, smart home devices, and kitchen appliances all require dedicated circuits. Older homes in Orange County were designed for a fraction of today's electrical demand.

Option 1 — Tandem Breakers

If your panel has slots that support tandem breakers — sometimes called double-stuff or slim breakers — you can fit two breakers in one slot, effectively doubling your capacity without a panel upgrade. Not all panels support tandems and not all slots can accept them. We check this during our free estimate.

Cost: $150-$400 per tandem breaker installed.

Option 2 — Sub Panel

If your main panel is full but has capacity amperage, installing a sub panel in the area where you need power is often the most cost-effective solution. A sub panel feeds off your main panel and provides multiple new circuits exactly where you need them.

Cost: $1,500-$4,500 installed with permits.

Option 3 — Panel Upgrade

If your panel is both full and undersized — common in Orange County homes with 100-amp or older 150-amp panels — a full panel upgrade to 200-amp or 400-amp is the right solution. This gives you maximum capacity and eliminates the problem permanently.

Cost: $2,500-$8,000 installed with permits.

Option 4 — Load Management

In some cases, existing circuits can be reorganized and loads redistributed to free up capacity without adding hardware. This is a short-term solution but can work for specific situations.

Which Option Is Right for Your Orange County Home?

The answer depends on your panel's current condition, your home's amperage, what circuits you need to add, and your long-term plans. During our free estimate we assess all of these factors and recommend the most cost-effective solution for your specific situation.
